A Cloudflare Web Analytics alternative
Cloudflare Web Analytics is free, writes no cookies and does not fingerprint the device. For many sites that is entirely enough, and we have no intention of talking anyone into paying for something they do not need. The differences start where the question stops being "how much traffic was there" and becomes "is this page working".

Where the free counter ends
All of these limits are in Cloudflare own documentation and none of them is a fault: they are deliberate choices of a tool that is an add on rather than a product.

Data is sampled after seven days
Events are kept in full for the first week and then aggregated down to around ten percent of the original volume. Dashboard queries are sampled too, at a rate that depends on filters and data volume. For "is traffic growing" that is enough. For "how many people reached this one page last quarter" it is not.

History reaches six months
You can access data for the previous six months. Year over year comparison, the only comparison that survives seasonality, is out of reach. We keep events for 25 months and the Pro plan shows 24 of them.

There are no custom events and no goals
The documentation says plainly that custom events are not available yet. Without them you cannot count a signup, a purchase or a click on a form, which is what people look at traffic for in the first place. What is left is a pageview count and a list of paths.

It is an add on to the network, not a product
Web Analytics is part of a larger platform and moves at its pace. That is not an accusation, it is a description: a tool nobody pays for also has nobody it makes written promises to.

Which one to choose
This is a question about whether you watch traffic or manage it. For the first, the free counter is the right answer.
Choose metuno if
- you want to measure conversions, not only count pageviews
- you need unapproximated data, including from a few months back
- you compare year over year or season to season
- you want raw events on your own disk, one file per month
- you want data never to leave the European Union
Choose Cloudflare Web Analytics if
- your site sits behind Cloudflare anyway and you only want to know how much traffic there was
- you do not measure conversions and do not plan to
- a picture of the last few weeks is enough and you never reach into history
- zero a month is a requirement rather than a preference
- you would rather not create another account in another service
Questions that come up most often
- If Cloudflare is free, why pay?
- If the free counter answers your questions, there is no reason to. Our free plan costs nothing either and covers one site with no traffic ceiling, so comparing costs you nothing beyond pasting one line.
- What does sampled data actually mean?
- That after the first week not every event is stored, only an aggregated part of them, around ten percent of volume according to the documentation. The numbers in the dashboard are then an approximation scaled up from a sample. Ours are not: every event that reached us is counted.
- Can I run both at once?
- Yes, and for the first month that is the best way to compare. The two scripts do not interfere, and putting two independent measurements side by side tells you more about both than either does alone.
- Will your script slow the page more than theirs?
- Both are small and both load without blocking rendering. Ours is 1.6 kB brotli compressed, makes one request and does not ask the browser about itself, so it triggers no layout recalculation. Neither of us has anything to win on this front.
- Do you count visitors without JavaScript?
- Yes, optionally. You get an image tag to paste inside noscript, and those visits record the path, browser, system and country. They will not record the referrer, so they land in direct traffic, and we say so plainly instead of leaving a silent gap.
